The Automotive Industry Goes Full Auto

When I hear the word robotics, I automatically start thinking about Johnny 5 from those 1980’s movies, but in recent years, even recent days, robotics has become more popular. My personal fondness of robotics took off when I was reading about a U.S based company called Hanson Robotics that was developing animated robots with pretty robust artificial intelligence; technology so advanced that ‘Jules’ as he is called, could identify you by your face and respond to nearly any question you could throw at him. 

The implications for human like robotics are always the topic of science fiction and reality. This is certainly a topic that could foster hours of conversation within MIT’s elite. Automation is the topic at hand, and it seems to be the talk in nearly every facet of operations, including information technology. Automate a process and you will not only reduce the margin of human error, you will ultimately reduce your direct labor cost, and it is certainly easier to monitor quality when functions are linear. The very reason why CNC machining took off in the 1970’s was because it was computer controlled, precise, and nearly autonomous in nature, except for a little human interaction by the operator.
 
When robotics started to take off in the automotive industry in the 1980’s, specifically on the production line, the cost of technology was far greater. Not that it isn’t very costly today, but compare the prices of even personal computer technology during that period and you’ll understand what I am really implying. There was an obvious return on investment that automotive manufacturers like Ford and General Motors realized, but the upfront costs were in fact great. You would only want to invest in such technology if you were expecting to produce extremely high levels of inventory, where gained efficiency would create a higher margin of cost savings, resulting in a shorter investment return period. This would also help supply consumer demand if scarcity was a threat, but we’ll save micro economics 101 for another day. I believe that history is repeating itself as far as the investment in robots goes, especially on this scale. The North American robotics industry, represented by the Robotic Industries Association or RIA, has released purchase data for the first 2 quarters of 2011 and the numbers are really good. As a whole, robotics orders are up 41% overall, and the industry says that is the best results they have seen since 2007. 

Nearly 600 million dollars in robotics were ordered by North American based companies. When compared nominally to the same base period in 2010, there were 50% gains in purchase orders for the second quarter this year. Most of the orders have come from automotive companies and their suppliers. It is no surprise that the automotive industry purchases more robotics technology than any other industry but both the food and consumer retail industry saw growth as well; 60% versus their previous results in 2010. However, automotive has taken a hit in recent years, so paired with increased exports from small to medium sized firms, manufacturing here in the United States is starting to see a few gleams of sun through their piles of inventoried steel. I would just like to see towns like Braddock, Pennsylvania recover after the U.S steel industry took a nose dive. I know that this is another industry that needs help, and that if growing, would produce high paying jobs. Now that I’m reporting on the recovery of the automotive sector, let us see if we can’t jump start a few industries through speculation and optimism.

CNC Machining Videos Posted

Even for those who do not work in the industry, CNC machines can be an interesting subject. We believe it is important to educate our customers and the general public about how the CNC machining process works, and the various types of products that can be made using this technology. Last week on Friday, April 8th 2011, we shot two videos of turning and milling in high-definition that were posted to the JC Gibbons YouTube channel earlier today seen here: CNC Machining on YouTube

The first video we produced was the machining of a bushing from DOM tubing. The second video we produced was that of a keyway cutter making a 10 mm hex on a special threaded rivet. They are both really close up, which shows you exactly how parts are made. We've produced many parts here at JC Gibbons for the automotive, HVAC, electrical, defense, aerospace, and other industries. J.C Gibbons: Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center SUCCESS STORY

J.C. Gibbons (J.C.), in Livonia, Michigan, manufactures precision screw machine and CNC products. The technical knowledge of its skilled staff has ensured the highest quality product since 1959. J.C. Gibbons can take a prototype job and move it into low or high volume production without ever leaving its facility. A robust ISO9001:2000 program is the driving force behind J.C. Gibbons’s quality system and provides assurance that each job is made in a reliable, consistent manner. Statistical Process Control (SPC) data is analyzed at the shop floor level daily in order to manufacture quality parts. This ensures a better, more consistent product for customers. With all of these strengths firmly in place, J.C. Gibbons Vice President, Jeff Gibbons, was ready to expand his company’s reach beyond the automotive industry to find opportunities in other markets.

With this goal in mind, Jeff contacted the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) to begin its market diversification program. At the beginning of the program, J.C. identified their biggest challenge as an internal lack of resources devoted to securing new business. Robert Hess, MMTC’s Growth Services Director, conducted an assessment which was critical to illustrating the importance of having dedicated resources. In order to focus as much as possible on diversification, Jeff brought his brother Dan in to help manage the day to day operations. The process of diversification involved learning new tools to help identify key strengths - both in J.C.‘s manufacturing processes and in the finished product itself.

One of the most powerful tools was developing an understanding of the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code process and utilizing it to identify new business opportunities, while avoiding industries with declining trends. This approach helped link J.C. with a medical industry supplier in Troy, Michigan. What began with a quote for one part has developed into a strong working relationship. Now J.C. is supplying 10 different parts to this same company! Another search connected J.C. with a local commercial signage company which led to opportunities in related industries.

In addition to learning how to identify new markets with NAICS codes, J.C. learned a variety of sales and marketing approaches to implement within those selected markets. Activities ranged from developing a telephone call script to creating and sending out e-mail flyers advertising their products and services. They even discovered how to make better sales use of existing assets, such as using on-hold messages to provide informative and compelling messages to clients during any necessary wait times. This is a simple example of an additional sales approach that many companies can take advantage of, at virtually no cost. 

Today, through hard work and assistance from the MMTC market diversification program, J.C.’s business is about 49% automotive instead of 75%, and the medical and other diversified markets continue to grow. J.C. continues to pursue excellence in difficult economic times and MMTC has been there right alongside to coach and to encourage implementation. Training with the MMTC has included Activity-Based-Costing financial analysis, LEAN office projects, LEAN Kaizens, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) training in addition to the market diversification program. “The MMTC’s goal is to make you better and to help you grow your business,” Jeff stated, “as a small company, we wouldn’t have been able to diversify without help.” As a result of working with the MMTC team, J.C. has been able to grow their non-automotive business 9.3% over the last eighteen months, during one of the toughest economic periods in decades.
