Construct a Tiny Altoid Can Robot with Household Materials!

Robots can be hard and frustrating to build, but not exactly every robot. Take the Tiny Altoid Tin Robot for example. Its simple, yet fun to construct. The amazing thing about this little bot is that it reacts to the sound that it hears. In fact, you can get this bot up and running with a few scrap parts and a few other parts from Radio Shack! Lego NXT CNC Machine to Help Build Circuits

Tonight, I began my next Lego project. This one, I have to say, is probably the hardest. This is because it's a 3 axis CNC machine. The sole purpose of this project is to help me make more circuit boards for projects. I also think it's pretty neat to have a Lego CNC machine laying around. Anyways, after about two hours of hardcore tinkering and building, here's the progress. Feel free to comment or to give any recommendations!

Custom PCB's, Plastics, and More!

Making robots at home is really enjoyable. What's even better is when you can custom make your own parts! So that's exactly what I've been working on. After a little research, I figured out how to make custom plastic parts and custom PCB's! For the plastic, I will use simple molds from nuts, bolts, and other items of that matter. I will then melt down some InstaMorph� plastic beads for the molds. For the PCB's, I will use the copper clad and ferric chloride method. Along with the drilling of course. For now, I have two PCB's made. These two, in fact, are for the official SimpleBot. Thanks for reading and I'll be updating you guys with photos of the progress.

Lego robot is able to fold and throw paper airplanes!

Folding airplanes can be pretty tricky. Well, that's not the case with this Lego robot! Constructed out of two NXT kits, this Lego robot is able to fold and throw paper airplanes. Don't believe me? Check out the video above, and have a great weekend!

Hate shoveling snow? Meet roboplow!

As of now, shoveling snow snow yourself is a chore of the past! Well, only of you have Roboplow. Roboplow is a homemade RC robot that is capable of plowing through snow. Using a 50 inch shovel, 6 heavy-duty wheels, and a webcam, this robot can shovel a whole sidewalk in less than a minute. Doubtful in this robot's strength? Don't be, because even a foot of snow won't slow it down.

Lego Mindstroms EV3, the newest Lego mindstorms kit

Back in 2007, Lego released the Lego Mindstorms NXT, and then the came the NXT 2.0 in 2009. However, this fall, Lego will release a whole new type of Lego Mindstorms. They call it the Mindstroms EV3. Unlike its predecessor's, the latest Mindstorms kit has some pretty advanced features. For example, it is now equipped with a USB port, and SD card slot, and it can be controlled via an iOS or Android device. The robot's "brain" has also been equipped with multiple upgrades. This includes a better processor and more memory. All these new features add up to one amazing robotics kit. With literally hundreds of projects, the sky's the limit. Lego mindstorms NXT 2.0 humanoid

After purchasing the Lego NXT 2.0 kit, I decided to build to the humanoid robot. The robot itself took me 4 hours to construct and the programming took me 20 minutes. It's features include walking, moving its arms, and avoiding obstacles. To top it all off, I added in a little Walle-E "woah" sound. That means that the every time this robot encounters an impeding obstacle, it says "woah." Thanks for reading and check out the video above!

Homemade PCB for a new robot

After messing around with a lot of wires in my projects, I decided to make my own PCB. For this PCB forging method, I used ferric chloride (Iron(III) Chloride) and an ordinary permanent marker. I first cut the copper clad into a small shape. After that, I drew on the design and then placed it into the etching solution. Roughly 20 minutes later, the PCB was ready! The only thing left to do was dispose of the Copper Chloride (because it had copper in it) . To dispose of the acid, I poured baking soda (a base) into a bucket with the acid. It then reacted to form a safe byproduct that can be placed in a bag and tossed away. Thanks for reading and more updates will be posted soon! Merry Christmas!


Homemade shirt-folding robot

Folding shirts can take some time, especially if you have a lot to fold. The solution is my latest robot, the vex shirt-folder. It uses 3 strong servos and a cardboard platform to neatly fold shirts (and pants if your feeling really lazy). If you want to see more information, check out letsmakerobots.com .

Lego NXT robot draws the Mona Lisa

Since nothing relating to robotics has really stood out today, I decided to share this amazing Lego robot video with you. It shows a small Lego robotic arm drawing the Mona Lisa. Don't take my for it, check out the video above to see for yourself.

Wouldn't it be awesome if a robot drew a portrait of you? If you think so, then give a round of applause to "6 robots named Paul." These servo driven arm robots were demonstrated at the Merge Festival 2012 in London. Since the festival was partly dedicated to art, these bots fit right in. With just 4 servos and a computer, each robot was able to draw a dazzling portrait. It's obvious that these bots were the real McCoy when it came to artistic ability. New Toothpick flinging robot makes a bridge out of toothpicks

Here's another simple robot that uses an ingenious method to solve a problem. I call it "toothpick bot," since it randomly flings toothpicks to make a crossable bridge. Check out the video above to see this robot's problem solving technique. I may even make this sorta robot with my vex kit, so be on the look out for a new post that features my robot.

If you're interested in building awesome robotics projects without that much background knowledge, then this book is perfect for you. "Robotics: Discover the Science and Technology of the Future with 20 Projects," is a fairly new book that has 20 simple robotics projects. Although they are simple, they're still amazing. For example, it shows readers how to construct a tilt sensor out a straw and some safety pins. Other projects include actuated arms, a coffee ground gripper, and even an artificial hand. I don't know about you, but i think all this would make MacGyver proud. If you're interested in purchasing this book, then stop by Barnes and Noble and pick one up for $16.00. Robot made by High school students to pitch at tigers baseball game

The most automated pitching machine I have seen is just a curved tube with a motor. Now, it's a robot built by high school students. Developed by the Detroit-area high school students, this robot is fully capable of hurling a baseball at some stunning speeds. The name chosen for this awesome robot is "Cy-ber Young." The robot uses a SCUBA tank to force a large amount of air through a PVC pipe, and then the air shoots the baseball out. The robot is the size of a shopping cart, so it's basically just a remote controlled pea shooter. Thanks for reading and check back tomorrow to see a video of this robot pitching the baseball!

I have been interested in making simple, yet fascinating robots for a long time. After being on instructables and YouTube for a while, I have found a particular user that makes simple robots. His username is "randofo" and he makes robots called "SimpleBots." All of his robots are made from household materials and some basic electronic parts. For example, a tennis ball robot, and plastic box robot, and even a phone walker robot. All of these robots can be found on instructables.com and at youtube.com/user/randofo . Arduino voice recognition robot!

Most Arduino robots that I've seen use a sketch (program) to be controlled. However, this one uses awesome voice control! The robot consists of a plastic chassis, an Arduino, and a special shield that enables the robot to be controlled via voice commands. It moves using two motors hooked up to wheels and so far it can move forward, backward, right, and left. If you interested in seeing this robot, then you can check out the first test video above. Plastic cup "transformer" robot

A few days ago, I got out the arduino board, some servos, and a plastic cup. A few lines of code and some hot glue was all it took to make this simple transformer robot. The robot itself was crafted out of a plastic cup and it's arms were small pieces from each side of the cup. Small feather servos moved each arm revealing that's it's not just an ordinary cup. New robot caterpillar made from bamboo

Most robots today are constructed and have a chassis made out of metal and or plastic. However, this bot differs from them all. Instead, it's made out of pieces of bamboo. The pieces are attached to the servos with hot glue (I think there are 2 servos, but I'm not sure). The bot's battery pack is on one end and this includes 4 AA batteries. The robots size is the reason the power supply is so minute when you compare to other robots. Thanks for reading and check out the video below to see it in action!
